Firstly we have to know, what is USB?

USB stands for ‘Universal Serial Bus’. USB ports are used to attach/connect different devices

with each other. For example – connecting mobile to laptop with data cable, connecting pen

drive to laptop or PC. USB has undergone many versions but USB 3.0 is the latest version after

USB 1.0 and 2.0.

The devices like mouse, keyboard, pen drives, Game consoles etc which are connected to the

computer or host controller all use USB Ports. The main difference between USB 2.0 & USB 3.0

is the transfer speed. USB 3.0 is 10 times faster than USB 2.0.

The transfer speed of USB 2.0 is 480 Mbps which is sufficient at earlier times but now it is not

sufficient. Data transfer rate at 480 Mbps speed consumes large amount of time. In comparison

to this USB 3.0 is almost 10 times faster than USB 2.0. The transfer speed of USB 3.0 is 5Gbps

(Giga bits per second) depends upon the hardware configuration.

The main benefit of USB 3 is that, it also supports USB 2.0 & USB 1.0. Now days USB 3.0 hard

drives and gadgets are launched in the markets. Modern operating systems such as Windows 7

already has support built in for USB 3.0. Motherboard manufacturers also provide USB 3.0 port

with their upcoming motherboards.

USB 3.0 allows simultaneous reading and writing between two connected devices, which is not

possible in case of USB 2.0. USB 3.0 consumes more power as compared to USB 2.0 & USB 1.0.

USB 3.0 is characterized by blue color as shown.
